Sharps Disposal Program
Q:
What are "Sharps"?
A:
Sharps include medical needles, syringes, and lancets (finger
stick devices) and other sharp medical instruments. |
|
 |
It is illegal to discard your used
needles,
syringes, and lancets into
your household garbage, recyclable blue bags or flushing down
the toilet. This practice is extremely dangerous and can
result in serious diseases through accidental needle sticks
to garbage collectors, recycling operators, and the general
public. |
|
 |
All needle stick injuries demand
expensive testing, cause long-term emotional stress, and increasing
the risk of exposure to infectious diseases such as Hepatitis B and
HIV from contaminated needles. |
|
 |
Q:
How do I dispose of needles or sharps?
A: Both
St. Nicholas Hospital and Aurora Health Care have programs
that offer proper disposal options to area residents. |
|
 |
Pharmacies may also provide
disposal services as well as sell proper containers for sharps
disposal. Check with your neighborhood pharmacy. |

Household Hazardous Waste Collection
Household hazardous wastes are
prohibited from being disposed into your curbside collection. What
are household hazardous wastes? Items such as: flammable liquids,
oil-based paints, solvents, varnishes, thinners, reactives
(typically pool chemicals), fluorescent bulbs, computers, household batteries,
acids & bases, old gasoline, pesticides & herbicides, cleaners,
aerosols, poisons and antifreeze.
The Sheboygan County administers the household hazardous waste
collection program. Sheboygan County has established two collection
sites for disposing of hazardous wastes. There is no charge to
County residents (except for the disposal of computers). The
program is funded with County tax dollars - proof of residency may
be required.
View the
Sheboygan County web site for additional information on
disposing of household hazardous waste. |
