Lead-based Paint Reduction

Lead exposure in young children can cause reduced IQ and attention span, learning disabilities, developmental delays, and a range of other health and behavioral effects. Most exposures occur in homes or daycares built before 1978 where lead-based paint has deteriorated because of deferred maintenance or where lead hazards have been created through renovation done without using lead-safe work practices.

Prevention of lead poisoning can be accomplished by eliminating lead-based paint hazards before children are exposed. Wisconsin’s goal is to eliminate this disease by working to make Wisconsin’s housing lead-safe, and by improving the detection and treatment of lead poisoning in children.

The City of Sheboygan has 24,000 housing units built prior to 1978. Funding is available through the Department of Planning and Development for housing units with children under the age of 6 years old.

If you reside in a housing unit located in the City of Sheboygan, built prior to 1978 and children under 6 years of age are present, please contact the Dept. of Planning and Development at (920) 459-3377 or by email to development@ci.sheboygan.wi.us to learn more.
